What is myopic macular degeneration and what is being done to find a cure?

This month's condition-specific Virtual Clinic will focus on myopic macular degeneration, why it occurs and how a cure could be found.

Myopic macular degeneration is a type of macular degeneration that occurs in people with severe myopia - commonly known as short-sightedness.

People with high myopia are at risk of pathological myopia, which means permanent degenerative changes can occur to the retina, due to elongation of the eye. Any of these degenerative changes can include the macula. Where they do, it’s called myopic macular degeneration.

So, what do we know about why the condition occurs? And what is being done to find a cure for the condition?

At our next condition-specific Virtual Clinic on Thursday 27 May at 6.30pm we will be joined by professor Pete Coffey from University College London, as he looks deeper into the condition and what treatments could be successful in the future.
