US stem cell trial for dry AMD

A clinical trial being conducted in the US and Israel is treating advanced dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) with new retinal cells, developed from stem cells.

The study is similar to the London Project to Cure Blindness taking place at University College London and Moorfields, which is looking at a stem cell therapy to treat wet AMD.

Much like the London Project, the new retinal cells are injected under the retina in the affected eye of each patient.

This latest study will treat 24 patients and investigate the safety of the stem-cell based cells as well as if they can restore vision. Early results look promising but it is too early to judge how much vision could be restored with this treatment.
