Drivers to be screened for sight loss

Every driver stopped this month by one of three police forces in England will have their vision checked. During this time, drivers in Thames Valley, Hampshire and the West Midlands who are unable to read a number plate from 20 metres away will automatically lose their license.

Police hope that this basic test will find people who continue to drive despite being unable to see well enough to react to a hazard in good time. The data collected during September 2018 will also give them a better idea of how many people are driving dangerously across the UK.

Although eye tests are recommended for most people every two years, Vision Express estimates that four in five drivers are overdue.
